Disc one:
Frostbite is an ulcer caused by exposing a body to very low temperatures, technically, it happens by freezing the water in the blood and tissues. This type of injury occurs in case of prolonged stay in a place with extreme negative changes and begins to manifest itself in areas on the body such as the fingers and toes, nose or cheeks. That is, in an important instinct, in order to protect and maintain irrigation in the center of the body, as extremities cool and freeze. Following this logic, which is actually a law of nature, the last organ to be “frozen” would be the central mechanism of blood distribution, the heart.
In this sense, the title “Heart Frostbite” intends, through this physiological impossibility, to lead to a metaphor, maintaining a thematic coherence that has guided the work of Marçal dos Campos and philosophy intrinsic to the New Emotion. Here, a frostbite in the heart, obviously does not have its origin in exposure to low temperatures, but may have its cause in strong emotions or deep feelings of nostalgia.
Disc two:
The origin of the term Nova Emoção (New Emotion) is imprecise, but it is believed to have been used for the first time in 2004, during a conversation between João Alves Marrucho and Albino Tavares, both of them design students at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Porto at the time.
There were reflections about music and design; and there also was the urgency to confront some of the aesthetic trends that were asserting themselves at that time: Swiss design, minimal techno; or some over-conceptualized movements within the areas of experimental electronics and late conceptual art. The motto was relatively simple: assume the technical limitations, do as you can and, of course, emphasize the only thing that distinguishes us from Artificial Intelligence, the emotions. Don’t be afraid of colors, pixels, clichés, cheesy melodies or mp3 compression.
Following these thoughts, in February 2005 the Ástato CD-R publisher was founded, by João Alves Marrucho, Albino Tavares and Duarte Amorim (also a design student), which goal was to release DIY sonic adventures at a very low-cost. New Emotion was for example: +1, VEC, Último, Ana and, of course, Marçal dos Campos. The label sought for synergies within the city’s artistic scene, inviting artists for collaboration on the album covers. During the “golden years” of Nova Emoção the group organized numerous parties in different venues, specially the famous “Gala Nova Emoção” at Passos Manuel.
“New Emotion Revisited 2002-2015”, released fifteen years after the release of Ástato CD-R’s first album (EP Bip! Um Tigre Ás! By Ana), is a split LP that brings together some of the most striking tracks by two of the most consistent producers within the genre: Ana3 (which started out as just Ana) and Marçal dos Campos. In addition to the historical value, for this is the only album ever dedicated to Nova Emoção, released in vinyl, this compilation is also a tribute to an artistic micro-movement and the Ástato CD-R label. For this reason, following in the footsteps of the now defunct label, both inserts were drawn by two essential artists within Porto’s artist-run spaces: André Sousa and Isabel Carvalho.
